The “दशरथकृत शनि स्तोत्र” or “Dashratha Shani strotra” is an ancient hymn dedicated to Lord Shani (Saturn), one of the Navagrahas or nine celestial deities of Hindu astrology. It is believed that this stotra was composed by King Dasharatha, the father of Lord Rama, when he faced adversities due to the adverse position of Shani in his horoscope.
According to the legend, King Dasharatha’s kingdom was facing numerous challenges because of the malefic position of Shani. To mitigate the effects of Shani, Dasharatha composed and recited this stotra with devotion. Pleased by his devotion, Shani granted him relief from the afflictions and promised that anyone who recites this stotra with faith would also get relief from the ill effects of Saturn.
The stotra itself extols the greatness of Shani and asks for his blessings and mercy. By chanting this stotra, devotees believe that they can appease Lord Shani and reduce the malefic effects of Saturn’s transit or Sade Sati (a period of 7 and a half years when Saturn transits through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from one’s Moon sign).
In Indian astrology, Saturn or Shani is often considered a planet that brings hardships, lessons, and discipline to one’s life. However, he’s also revered as a just and fair deity who rewards hard work, perseverance, and righteousness. Thus, the Dasharatha Shani Stotra serves as a medium for devotees to seek Shani’s grace and blessings.

नम: कालाग्निरूपाय कृतान्ताय च वै नम: ।।
नमो निर्मांस देहाय दीर्घश्मश्रुजटाय च।
नमो विशालनेत्राय शुष्कोदर भयाकृते।।
नम: पुष्कलगात्राय स्थूलरोम्णेऽथ वै नम:।
नमो दीर्घायशुष्काय कालदष्ट्र नमोऽस्तुते।।
नमस्ते कोटराक्षाय दुर्निरीक्ष्याय वै नम:।
नमो घोराय रौद्राय भीषणाय कपालिने।।
नमस्ते सर्वभक्षाय वलीमुखायनमोऽस्तुते।
सूर्यपुत्र नमस्तेऽस्तु भास्करे भयदाय च।।
अधोदृष्टे: नमस्तेऽस्तु संवर्तक नमोऽस्तुते।
नमो मन्दगते तुभ्यं निरिस्त्रणाय नमोऽस्तुते।।
तपसा दग्धदेहाय नित्यं योगरताय च।
नमो नित्यं क्षुधार्ताय अतृप्ताय च वै नम:।।
ज्ञानचक्षुर्नमस्तेऽस्तु कश्यपात्मज सूनवे।
तुष्टो ददासि वै राज्यं रुष्टो हरसि तत्क्षणात्।।
देवासुरमनुष्याश्च सिद्घविद्याधरोरगा:।
त्वया विलोकिता: सर्वे नाशंयान्ति समूलत:।।
प्रसाद कुरुमे देव वाराहोऽहमुपागत।

Namo nirmamsa dehaya dirghashmashrujataya cha|
Namo vishalanetraya shushkodara bhayakrite||
Namah pushkalagatraya sthulalomnay atha vai namah|
Namo dirghayashushkaya kaladashta namo’stute||
Namaste kotarakshaya durnirikshyaya vai namah|
Namo ghoraya raudraya bheeshanaya kapaline||
Namaste sarvabhakshaya valimukhayanamo’stute|
